Vermont Supergroup, Kilimanjaro achieved international recognition over 25
years ago. Their first LP debuted at number three in the country for Jazz
Radio Airplay and their second release followed at number five on the jazz
charts, earning the group Indie Awards for both titles. All of this
attention landed them appearances at some of the most prestigious jazz
festivals in the U.S. and Europe, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival in
Switzerland, and the well known Newport Jazz Festival at home. It also
led to several successful national tours, including one backing up iconic
bluesman Paul Butterfield, to much critical and audience acclaim.
This 1980s jazz-rock fusion band was simpatico with much of the decade's
popular modern jazz, particularly with the Pat Metheny Group, but the
local quartet's vision was more influenced by rhythm-and-blues and
soul/funk. In fact, the tight, powerful unit morphed into the very well
known Unknown Blues Band as an off-night "alter-ego" to back the legendary
Big Joe Burrell. Both Kilimanjaro albums, as well as their live sets,
benefited from stylish compositions and a dynamic rhythm section, not to
mention the twin instrumental voices of Paul Asbell's guitar and Chas
Eller's keyboards.
This year the band is proud to present saxophonist
Chris Peterman, who will be joining the band for some of their summer
appearances. Chris appears on the long awaited CD that the band is just
now putting the finishing touches on. It will be their first CD in 25
years and is expected to be released sometime in the summer of 2008.
